Actor Couple Married for Over 40 Years: Choosing Love Over Marriage
Goldie Hawn has opened up about why she never married her longtime companion, Kurt Russell, and her feelings on the institution of marriage.
During a candid interview with CNN, the 77-year-old actress was asked why she never chose to tie the knot with her partner of over four decades. In response, she gracefully questioned, “What’s the necessity of getting married?”
Both Hawn and Russell, 72, had previously been married to other people and learned that when a relationship doesn’t work out, “it always looks ugly.” “Someone has to say, ‘How many divorces are fun?'” she wondered. How much does getting divorced cost? To what extent has your dislike for that individual grown compared to when you initially crossed paths with them? ‘How much harm did divorces cause to children?'”
She indicated that she does not want to be tied to marriage and prefers waking up every morning and actively choosing whether to remain in the union. “Relationships are difficult. They are not simple. We all go through a variety of difficulties. We all have our share of trust and distrust, along with the areas where we find common ground, she elaborated.
In the end, Hawn expressed her belief that it is crucial to maintain your independence in thoughts and emotions, allowing you to truly embrace your own identity and experience the true essence of that sentiment.
The couple has been adamant about not marrying throughout their long-term relationship. Russell confirmed in a March interview with Variety that during the 1989 Oscars ceremony, where they both presented prizes, they purposefully teased the idea of getting married because they didn’t like what was written for them.
We decided to freshen up together, preparing for the event,” Russell recounted, “and as we made eye contact, we exchanged a knowing glance and whispered, ‘With all eyes on us, let’s make sure we’re picture-perfect.'” And then the brawl began. We talked for around 20 minutes. We didn’t utter a single word that wasn’t carefully penned within the script.
Russell acknowledged thirty years later that it was truly a spontaneous act. Throughout that duration, we frequently encountered the persistent inquiry: “When do you envision exchanging vows?” ‘Why haven’t you married?’ “And we questioned ourselves, “What is the need for us to do so?'” he remembered. “We asked our children if they were bothered by it. They didn’t do it. We didn’t do it. “Consequently, we refrained from doing so,” he clarified.
Their paths intertwined for the very first time during the production of the film “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band” back in 1968, when Goldie Hawn, at the age of 22, crossed paths with Kurt Russell, who was merely 17 years old at the time. Russell’s mother had predicted that Hawn would dominate other ladies in his life before he took the part.
Have you noticed that girl over there with the quirky hairstyle? mother asked. “She’ll find work,” Russell told Variety. “And, indeed, she did. She struck me as incredibly gorgeous. You couldn’t have missed her. She simply had that thing.”
When Hawn recalled their first meeting with Pipal, she termed Russell “adorable but young.” However, fate brought them back together during the filming of “Swing Shift” in 1983, a year after she divorced her former husband, Bill Hudson, with whom she has two children, Oliver and Kate Hudson.
In 2020, Hawn revealed the secret to their long-lasting romance: “You just stay together.” I don’t think any other option is staying together indefinitely.”
